A proper shoot with the fashions of Kinki Kitty Designs and it’s proprietor, Helena.  With the generosity and help of one of the models friends, we were able to secure the use of a rooftop location in the heart of Detroit for this shoot. Despite it being in the middle of December, the weather was relatively balmy and we didn’t freeze.  Much.

On December 17, 2011 I attended a group shoot at the Collingwood Arts Center.  This facility encompasses a former convent, the Gerber House, and a theater, all connected physically over time and now serving as a unique artists residency and space for creative expression of all kinds. (Detailed info on the Collingwood Arts Center web site.)  The CAC Photography Collective has been putting on group shoots at this facility for approximately 7 years. Like most group shoots, models and photographers schedule time with one another however they see fit and use the spaces within the facility as backdrop.  Like the DEAC events that I’ve attended, the CAC shoots provide a broad range of interesting spaces to photograph within, which get’s the creative juices flowing in order to take full advantage of them.  This being my first time at a CAC shoot, I was unfamiliar with the place and therefore had to do a lot of improvisation.  Fortunately, that’s something I enjoy and tend to be good at!  I shot with five models using only the natural light filtering through windows and some wardrobe that I’ve been anxious to use.  Enjoy the results!

Every year since a couple years after it started, and assuming I’m in town, I’ve taken my camera to explore the madness that The Woodward Dream Cruise has turned into.  In addition to the Saturday of the cruise itself, I always manage to wander around on various evenings the week before which are sometimes almost as busy as the the main event.  This year was no different.  Though those who know me know I take exception to some of what the cruise has become (The trashiness and rudeness of many of the attendees, not to mention the commercialism.) I still love old cars and try to focus on that while I shoot, and on the friends I always see while out shooting.

The Weird Sisters Circus. When you hear the name it’s easy to imagine a scary group of women with beards,  snake scales and a third eye, on display at the freak show tent.  Nothing could be further from the truth.  These lovely ladies are both  fair to look at and supremely talented in acrobatics, silks trapeze and lyra. (An aerial hoop)  I managed to catch them at Ferndale’s Rustbelt Market the evening after Thanksgiving as the shops were winding down their day.  They put on an hour long performance that featured flips, twists, falls and flying through the air – and one heart-stopping moment.  If you haven’t seen them before, they are well worth putting on your calendar to see!!

I met Charlyn at DEAC 9 a couple months ago.  One day a few weeks ago she demanded (jokingly) a shoot with me, so we set something up and pretty much the whole thing was one big improvisation.  Somehow, we managed to produce some lovely images.  Must be my camera…

Kinki Kitty Designs is run by a good friend of mine, Helena – The Osaka Koneko.  She designs and makes clothing in a variety of alternative and subculture genres including lolita (A primarily Japanese phenomenon that was until recently her primary focus) steampunk, club gear, alt bridal and others. This show was Kinki Kitty’s grand entrance into the fashion world, even though she’s been making clothing for years.  Hosted by City Club, The event put a dozen models in front of a large and enthusiastic crowd.  The images capture both the backstage preparations and silliness as well as the show itself.

SPAM is the Society of Photographers and Models, a group based primarily in the Port Huron area that gathers once a month for the purpose of shooting in different locations and to different themes, providing experience and portfolio material for those that attend.  I joined this particular one at a park in early October when the Fall colors were at their most vibrant.  We had a beautiful day and came away with some great material!

Another shoot in the Gothic Rag Doll series I began earlier this year.  This time with three models, Tiffani, Rebecca and Kelly – All beautiful and easy to work with.  Joining us was the incredibly creative and talented make-up artist Riese Lauriat who went all out to give the models darkly unique looks.  Thanks Riese!!!  Also on the thank-you list is my friend Candy Draper who let us shoot in her house.  I managed to capture Tiffani in the fading light of sunset and then used strobes for the shots with Kelly and Rebecca as well as most of the group shots.

DEAC – The Detroit Erotic Arts Collaborative, is an event known in photography circles as a “group shoot”  Everyone involved: photographers, models, make-up artists, assistants, etc, trade their time for images.  Photographers and models schedule time in advance, within the location being used, and then spend the day shooting to whatever themes and ideas they have agreed upon.  DEAC 9 is actually the 10th time this event has been held. (There was a 1.5 event)  As has often been the case, it was held within the Leland Hotel in downtown Detroit, which, ironically, is no longer a hotel, but an apartment building, as well as having City Club, a ballroom and a gorgeous lobby to shoot in.  Other dilapidated spaces are also available giving a broad variety of possible themes and genres of photography to shoot.  The event is held over two consecutive days.  This year I had the pleasure of working with  7 models of varied appearance and character.

Friend and fellow photographer Lesa occasionally invites a few models  and photographers to her studio space for fun and shooting.  On this occasion, model Crystal joined us and provided some dynamic poses to accompany her colorful outfit and tattoos.
